Developer Jennifer Raye relates Imperishable Memories to the feeling of reminiscing about old art and memories and experiencing the nostalgia eventually give way to something more dreadful. It’s especially interesting when it begins to reference itself: during its first boss fight, a worn piece of binder paper with a penciled-in comic book panel juts out from an endless ocean.
Its combination of cartoonish 3D backdrops and 2D characters brings out the endearing qualities of its hand-drawn cut-outs, especially when the two start to interact in surprising ways. Even in its early stages, Imperishable Memories shows promise.

Despite the risk of death Yuito himself faces, he undergoes the procedure to confront his father one last time, but is instead left wandering a surreal and sometimes jumbled dreamworld constructed from fragments of his father’s experiences. While Yuito can’t speak with him normally, he has the opportunity to visit his father in his Memory World - think Satoshi Kon’s Paprika and its exploration of dreams.
